History of Pearson Early Childhood School

Lena Bishop was born on May 6, 1892, on a farm west of Plano in the vicinity of the current intersection of the Dallas North Tollway and Legacy Drive.
She grew up listening to stories of her heritage as told by her grandmother, Elizabeth Cook. One such story was about how, in 1845 at the age of 18, Elizabeth had come to Texas from St. Louis with her father, Henry Cook. Elizabeth Cook married Henry Heustis who fought in the Civil War. Together they had three daughters. One daughter was Martha Jane Heustis who married Choral Bishop, and became Lena’s mother.
Lena, with her brother and two sisters, attended the Barksdale School, a one room schoolhouse with only 9 grades. She graduated from Plano High School in May 1910. After attending Texas Normal School and receiving a permanent teacher’s certificate, she taught at Lucas and Barksdale until she married Charles Pearson.
Lena Bishop Pearson spent the next 20 years as a farmer’s wife, raising a daughter, Elizabeth, and a son, Charles. In 1941, a teacher was needed at the one room Barksdale School. Although it was wartime, she applied and was hired for the job. But before the year was over, the Plano School District closed the school, moving the students into Plano.
She went with the students and ended her teaching career at the Plano Public School. She continued to read, tell stories, and teach Sunday school. She died on January 26, 1988, at the age of 95.
Pearson Early Childhood Profile
Plano ISD provides a quality preschool program for children ages three to five at Pearson Early Childhood School. This learning community allows the district to meet the state-mandated guidelines for prekindergarten students and the least restrictive environment mandate for preschool special education students as required by state and federal law. These young learners are educated daily by certified professionals. We provide a librarian, counselor and nurse to meet the needs of the students. Our school caters to young learners within our state-of-the-art facility.
Plano ISD offers a number of programs for preschool children, which are outlined on this site. Students residing within Plano ISD attendance zone boundaries may register to attend one of three Early Childhood Schools (Beaty, Isaacs or Pearson) under one of the following three criteria.
- Tuition-Supported Community Prekindergarten
- State and Federal Programs
- Early Childhood Special Education
Tuition-Supported Community Prekindergarten
Children who are four years old on or before September 1 and who do not qualify for either the Early Childhood Special Education or Prekindergarten (described below) are eligible to enroll in the Tuition-Supported Prekindergarten Program at Beaty, Isaacs or Pearson Early Childhood Schools. Parents choose a three or five day per week program for their child and agree to pay a tuition fee in nine monthly installments. There is an additional non-refundable registration fee of $100 per child.
A packet of information describing this program and the registration procedure can be picked up at any Plano ISD early childhood school, the Plano ISD Administration Building at 2700 West 15th Street and at the Plano ISD Shiloh Center, Multilingual Assessment Office, at 3540 East 14th Street.

The PTA provides families with experiences for all family members as well as specific programming to meet the parenting needs of three and four year old children. The PTA also provides funding and educational materials for the classrooms to support the Pre-K guidelines and curriculum. Ask anyone at the ECS about how to join your PTA!
